I dont really watch a lot of anime anymore. Well that isnt actually true, I still watch a fair bit I just dont watch it regularly. I tend to wait for a sesaon to complete and then binge for a month or so as I refuse to watch shows week to week. Still, I’d totally forgot about the upcoming season, clearly slipping.
So here’s the chart (my preferred way to get an overview of a season) courtesy of Neregate.
Looking at it as a whole there are a lot of manga adaptations. Which is something I’m rather ambivalent about, I generally read/watch stuff for the story so if I’ve read the manga (which is basically a given these days) I find it hard to work up much interest in the anime. On the other hand for some stuff, particularly middle of the road action heavy manga, the anime adaptation can be “better”. This season also seems to have a lot more shows starting than usual, but I could simply be mis-remembering earlier seasons.
Really want to watch:
Arslan Senki
The original anime adaptation of Arslan Senki was one of those watershed shows for me, back when anime and manga were pretty hard to get a hold off over here. So I am very much interested in re-visiting it.
Kekkai Sensen
This seems to be right in my wheelhouse, dont see how I couldnt be interested in a show where its set “in a world of crazy crime sci-fi sensibilities” and peopled by “stylish superhumans”
Digimon Adventure tri.
While not based on my favourite of the earlier Digimon series I really love the idea of coming back to a series where the main protagonists have grown up. Also Digimon.
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatte iru. Zoku
I really enjoyed the first series, there was an implicit nihilistic despair underlying the more traditional love comedy aspects which I enjoyed.
Persona 3 the Movie #3 Falling Down
Love Persona 3, been holding off on the movies until they were all out so looking forward to getting stuck in.
Will be watching:
Re-Kan!
I am a complete sucker for anything thats “Modern Day + Supernatural”. The premise of this sounds interesting so unless its shite I’ll be watching it.
Shokugeki no Souma
I really enjoy the manga this is based on. I’m a big fan of cooking battle based stuff and theres not a lot of it out there. If the anime captures the comedy of the manga I think it will be worth a watch.
Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu
I absolutely loved the original Haruhi anime series, I never watched the sequel. But I did like Yuki as a character. I recently picked up the manga adpatation of Haruhi as well so unless this is shite it’ll be getting watched.
BAR Kiraware Yasai
This sounds like it could be pretty funny
Gintama
Miles behind on this but Gintama is one of the series where both the anime and manga have their own unique appeal and I enjoy both equally
Triage X
From the creators of Highschool of the Dead, the manga is a fun over the top “action movie-esque” piece of pure entertainment. If the anime adaptation captures that I’ll definitely watch it
Punch Line
After looking this up I think this could be amusing. Its going to depend on getting the balance between the humour and the, well, lets call it “ecchi” right.
Etotama
This just sounds fun, as may have become apparent, I’m much more lenient about giving comedies the benefit of the doubt.
Mikagura Gakeun Kumikyoku
The details on this seem rather vague and the shoujo tag does leave me a little leery. On the other hand the basic premise sounds like it could be cool so I’ll check it out.
Gungslinger Stratos
The games were cool and the basic premise sounds great. Game adaptations can be hit or miss though
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Words 2nd Season
UBW was by far the best route in the visual novel. Looking forward to the anime wrapping up so I can finally watch the first season.
Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darou ka?
Ive had my eye on this for a while, waiting for the fan translation of either the novel or the manga to produce enough material that I felt it was worth reading. The description here makes it sound shit but I’m hoping my initial interest wasnt misplaced
May watch aka will watch when I run out of other stuff:
Vampire Holmes
From the name to the description this sounds terrible. But I do like Sherlock Holmes pastiches so I’ll at least check it out down the road.
Denpa Kyoushi
Feels odd putting this here considering how much I enjoy the manga (which is excellent, check it out). But this is a series where it relies on the story, which I’m already familiar with, so seeing it animated doesnt really hold much appeal.
Owari no Seraph First Season
Another one that feels like its in the wrong place. Like Denpa Kyoushi I love the manga version of this. Unlike Denpa Kyoushi I think an anime adaptation of this could be really cool (as its pretty action heavy). But from what I’ve seen so far the colour palette and such just really doesnt suit the feel of the series. I’ll check out the first episode and if Im wrong then I’ll happily bump this up to will be watching.
Plastic Memories
The setup for this just feels amazingly overdone and cliche. You just know its going to pile on the pathos and melodrama.
Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono: Spin-off Puru Purun Sharumu to Asobou
Not familiar with the main series that its a spin-off from and it doesnt sound particularly great, but if its funny I’ll probably give it a watch down the line.
Koukaku Kidoutai Arise: Alternative Architecture
Still havent watched the original Arise so watching a re-hash of it doesnt hold a lot of appeal. On the other hand it is Ghost in the Shell so I know I’ll watch it at some point.
Show by Rock!!
Not a fan of anthropomorphic animal girls in general but this sounds like it could be funny. Its going to depend on where on the creepy vs funny scale it falls.
Kaitou Joker Second Season
I didnt watch the first season of this for some reason. Perhaps because it looks a bit too “kiddy”? On the other hand the description sounds interesting and I do like phantom thieves. So I may check out the first season and if I enjoy it I will of course watch this.
Daiya no A Second Season
One of my favourite sports manga, but I enjoy sports manga for the drama not for the actual sport being played. As such an animated version holds very little appeal for me as they generally dont have anymore drama, just more “footage” of the sport being played.
Hibike! Euphonium
I actually really enjoyed series like K-ON! which this sounds a lot like. But what buts me off is the implication that theres going to be DRAMA involved, my tolerance for melodrama is variable so I’ll see how it goes.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Battle City Hen
While I lost track of it years ago I did enjoy the original series which this seems to be a remaster off so I’ll give it a watch and see if I still enjoy it.
Nisekoi
Didnt watch the first series for the same reason I wont be watching this. While I enjoy the manga I’ve no real interest in seeing it animated.
Uta no Prince-Sama Maji Love Revolutions
Odd, I watched, and largely enjoyed (dont you judge me!), the two earlier seasons. But from what I recall the last season fairly definitively wrapped things up. Oh well I’ll check it out at least.
Yamada-kun to 7-nin no Majo
Another series where I really enjoy the manga but have next to no interest in an animated version
High School DxD BorN
I really wanted to enjoy the first season of this. But it was almost adamantly middle of the road. It had one or two decent bits but was pretty shit over all. I happened to read the manga of it last year and really enjoyed it so I’m a fan of the franchise. But given its poor anime track record I just cant get excited about this.
Baby Steps Second Season
Feels like Ive wrote this so many times at this point. Love the manga (probably easily in my top 10 sports manga), no real interest in seeing it animated.
Robot Girls Z Plus
Havent seen the first season, but it sounds interesting so I’ll be checking it out.
Ninja Slayer From Animation
This feels like its trying way too hard. Even the description makes me cringe. But Ive a feeling it could be good if it doesnt take itself seriously.
Houkago no Pleiades
Description doesnt really give a lot to go on. Could be good, could be terrible, going to have to wait and see.
Wont be watching:
Grisia no Meikyuu & Grisia no Rakuen
Havent watced, and have no interest in watching, the prequel so I’ve no reason to watch this. Some eroge/galgae adaptations are ok, but to be honest these days it takes a lot to get me interested in one.
Omakase Mamitasu
For some reason I just cant stand watching anime shorts.
Battle Spirits Burning
Cant really watch merchandising tie-ins anymore either
Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken Second Season
Really wanted to like the first season, but as I mentioned I just cant get into anime shorts.
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid
I’d actually like to watch this but the Lyrical Nanoha franchise is one I’ve been unable to get on board with. The StrikerS part of it always intrigued me but I watched first series when I wasnt really familiar with/into the typical magical girl setup and it sort of put me off the series as a whole.
Kyoukai no Rinne
While I enjoyed this mangaka’s earlier (seminal) works like Ranma or Inuyasha I just couldnt get into this. It just felt, overly simplistic and oddly dated. Not holding out much hope that the anime will improve on that.
Ame-iro Cocoa
Looks like another paint by numbers bishonen series. I dont mind otome stuff but nothing about this appeals.
Hello! Kin-iro Mosaic
Havent and wont be watching the first series so certainly wont be watching this
Duel Masters Versus Revolution
As I said above Im largely done with merchandising tie-ins
Nyuru Nyuru!! kakusen-kun Second Season
Didnt watch the first season
Teekyu Fourth Season
Didnt watch the first three seasons for the same reason I wont be watching this one. I’ve a weird aversion to anime shorts.
Takamiya Nasuno Desu!
A spin-off of the above series, which I wont be watching for the same reasons I didnt watch its “parent”
Urawa no Usagi-Chan
Sounds terrible, may change my mind if I hear good reports on it.
Sidonia no Kishi: Daikyuu Wakusei Seneki
I havent seen, but do want to watch, the first series. I wasnt a huge fan of the manga but I get the feeling its much better suited to an anime
Future Card Buddyfight 100
How many card battle merchandising tie-ins can there be?
Eikoku Ikke, Nihon wo Taberu
Sounds fucking terrible
PriPara
Didnt, and wont, be watching the first season so no reason to watch this.
Ore Monogatari!!
Dont know why, but just the description of this pisses me off
Saint Seiya: Ougon Tamashii
Time for my secret shame, never got into and have no interest in Saint Seiya
Lupin III
To compound my shame, I also dont like Lupin.
Narudoma
Just sounds boring
