Here’s the problem with Goodbye Krool World. They put Bad Company and Bad Company II in the same book. The original Bad Company series is great, complelling characters in an intriguing setting. The problem with sci-fi war stories is that sometimes the sci-fi flash overwhelms the story itself. However Bad Company conveys the quintessential madness and horror of war. In some ways its like Peter Milligans futuristic homage to Pat Mill’s Charley’s war. Well the good parts of Charley’s War. Whereas Bad Company II is a homage to all the shit parts of Charley’s War. Interesting characters are replaced by boring sci-fi stereotypes, the only character I gave a shit about towards the end was Kano (and the only good bits of it were the bits involving Kano). Danny goes from being the observer to the protagonist, and much like Charley he just isnt intersting enough to carry it off. At least the artwork is consistenly excellent throughout, though there are occasional slumps in Bad Company II. Where it looks, not really bad, just lazy. Still its well worth the read, maybe it wasnt quite so fresh this time around because its the fifth or six time Ive read through it.
Unfortunately this is just a small glimmer of light in the ongoing war. It took me over a week to get through a graphic novel (admiteddly because the second half was a bit boring). I really need to get back into a real book. Im not sure if Im going to plough into the main enemey foces with The Voice of the Wind or try for a flanking manoeuver with Dungeon Masters Guide 4th Edition.
