Yes that’s right. I am buying no more computer games, actually I’m buying no more games full stop (i.e. no more board games or role playing games either). Well starting in 2013 and excluding one or two that I have pre-ordered or Kickstarted. Why? you ask. Let me tell you.
It’s simple really, because I don’t need to. My Steam backlog alone is already obscene, never mind my combined computer gaming backlog (and heaven forbid I include games procurerd from the high seas). I have no need to buy new games in order to enjoy near endless hours of quality gaming. The same applies to both board games and role playing games (oh god does it apply to role playing games – something I havent had the chance to play regularly in years). So I decided enough is enough, starting in 2013 (gotta hit that Steam christmas sale brah) I am not purchasing any new games until my backlog is cleared. To be honest with work, my PhD (which I wildly regret starting right now) and the fact that I want to have at least one of the games I’m working on finished by this time next year I should really be cutting back severely on the amount of time I dedicate to games.
That’s pretty unlikely to happen if I remain immersed in the modern games industry non stop cycle of “preview – hype – release – repeat”. Missing out on the first few big games will be tough I know. But I think it’s probably a healthier approach in the long run (of course at this point little that I want has been confirmed for release in 2013 so this isnt really much of a sacrifice).
Well that’s more or less it. I had planned to fire out another design journal for Ave Imperator but have been laid low by a stealthy norovirus assault. I might get it out later in the week. But at least with this I’ve met my goal of at least something each week (and no doubt provided amusement for those who’ve seen how my previous ultimatums have gone).
Will 2013 be the year my Backloggery – http://backloggery.com/uthred turns from a wall of shame to a monument of glory? Or will I finially throw of the shackles of gaming altogether and do something “useful” with my life? Only time and my intermittent updates will tell!
